Start by identifying which Amazon card you mean
“Amazon credit card” can refer to different accounts. Chase’s Prime Visa and Amazon Visa are network cards; Amazon also offers store-card products with their own issuer and terms. Choose the specific account before comparing reward rates, acceptance or financing. A benefit advertised for one product does not automatically apply to another.
For an existing eligible Prime member who pays in full, a higher reward on normal Amazon spending can be useful. For someone considering Prime solely for a card benefit, the membership cost becomes part of the calculation. An opening gift card should be kept separate from a recurring-year comparison.
What the checked Prime Visa page says
As checked October 15, 2026, Chase describes no annual card fee and 5% back on eligible Amazon.com, Audible.com, Whole Foods Market and Chase Travel purchases with an eligible Prime membership. The terms describe a 3% rate for those eligible purchases without eligible Prime membership. Other categories and exclusions apply; use the current issuer terms linked below.
That difference is two percentage points on eligible spending, not five. Compare incremental value against a realistic alternative. If your existing card would earn 2% on the same purchases, a 5% rate creates a three-percentage-point advantage. Those are different comparisons and they answer different questions.
A membership break-even example
Suppose the membership cost allocated to this decision is a hypothetical $120 per year. If you are comparing a 5% rate with a 3% rate, the extra reward is 2%. Recovering $120 through that difference alone would require $6,000 of eligible spending: $120 divided by 0.02. The $120 figure is an illustrative input, not a quote for the current Prime membership price.
If you already keep Prime for other reasons, you may allocate none of its cost to the card decision. In that case, focus on the additional reward, account management and financing costs. Avoid counting membership benefits at their advertised value if you would not otherwise buy them.
Acceptance and financing are separate questions
A store card is not interchangeable with a Visa card for everyday use. Read the acceptance rules for the specific store product. Also inspect any financing choice at checkout rather than assuming it combines with the headline reward. Special financing can have different conditions from an ordinary rewarded purchase.
For the Visa products, merchant and location exclusions can matter. A brand name appearing in a shopping experience is not proof that the transaction qualifies for the highest rate. Confirm the eligible sites and merchants in the rewards terms.
Do a normal-year calculation
- Estimate eligible spending from the last twelve months.
- Compare rewards with a card you already have or could realistically use.
- Subtract any membership cost attributable to this decision.
- Consider account-management work and any interest or fees.
- Keep the opening promotion outside the renewal-year result.
Common questions
Does no annual card fee mean Prime is free?
No. A card fee and a membership charge are separate costs.
Is the Amazon Store Card the same as Prime Visa?
No. Compare the exact issuer, acceptance and financing terms.
What if I carry a balance?
Estimate repayment costs before valuing rewards. The payoff calculator can explore a fixed-payment scenario.
