The CardsReviews take

Read the specific offer before the headline.

Avoiding collateral can reduce the initial cash commitment, but a recurring fee is a cost rather than a refundable deposit. This profile covers the standard direct-website offer, whose assigned annual fee and APR need to fit the repayment plan.

Consider it if: you need to compare an unsecured offer and understand the recurring cost.

A closer look

How it works in real life.

Start with the exact offer

Avant publishes several pricing structures. This profile covers the standard direct-website offer rather than a mail invitation, introductory annual-fee variant or cashback product. A number from one of those other offers should not be substituted into this comparison. Read the rate-and-fee summary attached to your own account.

The annual-fee range is not a $0 promise

A hypothetical $300 limit with a $75 opening annual fee would leave $225 of available credit before purchases or other charges. The account would still have a $300 credit limit, but not $300 available to spend. That distinction matters when comparing an unsecured card with a secured alternative: one uses a fee that is a cost; the other may tie up a refundable deposit.

Compare a normal year, not just initial access

Write down the annual fee you are offered, the expected borrowing cost and the total credit you need for ordinary purchases. An account that avoids a deposit may still be expensive if recurring fees consume a meaningful part of a small limit. Opening a card should fit a repayment routine you can sustain without treating the limit as extra income.

A borrowing example

At the direct offer’s 35.99% APR, a hypothetical constant $500 balance implies roughly $15 of monthly interest using APR divided by twelve. Actual charges follow the account’s average-daily-balance method. That approximation is useful for scale: a few months of interest can outweigh a modest difference in annual fees.

Know which transactions are supported

Avant’s support information says AvantCard does not allow balance transfers. It should therefore not be selected as a way to move a debt from another card. A cash advance is a separate, costly transaction and is limited to a portion of the credit line. Do not treat the two transaction types as substitutes.

Alternatives to compare

If you can set aside collateral, compare the fee and cash commitment with Capital One Platinum Secured or Discover Secured. Different application requirements still apply; the comparison does not predict an approval decision.

Questions before applying

Will every applicant receive the $0 annual fee?

No. The direct offer publishes a range and assigns the actual fee.

Does this profile describe every Avant credit card?

No. Compare the named offer version and its agreement; rewards and pricing can differ across products and channels.

Is the fee refundable collateral?

No. An annual fee and a security deposit serve different purposes.
